History
Founded by some of the most prestigious sculptors in Canadian art history, the Sculptors Society of Canada has been exhibiting and raising the profile of sculpture in Canada for more than 75 years. The SSC was formed in 1928 by Frances Loring, Florence Wyle, Emmanuel Hahn, Elizabeth Wyn Wood, Henri Hébert, and Alfred Laliberté. By bonding together they were able to focus on the development of sculpture while raising the profile of Canadian sculpture locally and internationally. Through the Society and the support of fellow sculptors, works of the membership captured the interest of galleries, art festivals, and museums, including The National Gallery of Canada, The Toronto Art Gallery (now the Art Gallery of Ontario), and the International Biennale of Sculpture in Ravenna, Italy. In susequent years, the SSC organized numerous exhibitions including a 50th anniversary exhibition that toured throughout Europe, a 65th anniversary tour of the SSC Permanent Collection to the USA, and in its 75th year, works representing Canada were sent to the premier Beijing International Biennale in 2003.
The Sculptors Society of Canada is a charitable organization of professional artists who have completed their art training and are working as sculptors. Jurying of membership takes place annually. The purpose of the SSC is to perpetuate the original mandate which was implemented more than 75 years ago:
- to raise the profile of Canadian sculpture nationally and internationally
- to rally and encourage sculptors working at a professional level
- to discover and foster young talent
- to educate the public and community-at-large regarding sculpture
SSC activities have increased steadily ensuing many outreach programs. The Canadian Sculpture Centre, site of SSC's administrative headquarters and gallery is located at 500 Church Street, in midtown Toronto. The organization hosts exhibitions, professional development workshops, studio and gallery tours, (sculpture) walking tours, artist talks, and guest lectures. The gallery showcases members' works on a rotating monthly basis. Additionally the SSC sponsors curated and juried annual exhibitions of emerging sculptors and graduating students from across Ontario and Canada. The Canadian Sculpture Centre also houses members' portfolios which serve as a reference tool for SSC members, the public, consultants and potential collectors and patrons.
