Tyzo David Toccalino
Artist Statement
I have always had a fascination for found objects. Growing up in Oakville ON, I spent many hours beachcombing the shores of Lake Ontario. There I collected many common objects that had been worn, beaten and changed by the continuous motion of the waves. Henry Moore was an early influence on me. My early artistic endeavours incorporated these found objects into agglomerations or assemblages dramatizing my aesthetic of irrational juxtaposition. When I learned to weld in 1976, I fabricated sculptures by juxtaposing similar components into shape and mass. I tend to follow an intuitive approach not daring to question the source of my inspiration beyond the relationship between positive and negative shapes forming the sculpture as a whole. I like to think of my work as contemporary - as well as homage to all that has gone before.
