Artist Statement:
The element of craft is important to me and I am invigorated by the possibility of manipulating rusted metal and burnt wood which is both very heavy and cumbersome and, yet, fragile. Often, I begin a work with only a desire to move the two elements around one another, allowing their intrinsic shapes to dictate the final combination. In a sense, I am fascinated by the conversations between the elements of my work: they seem to hover between potential and kinetic energy, the metal continues to rust, the wood continues to deteriorate but at different speeds and in different ways. In some of my combinations I hear a warning of our own too-fast movements as a civilization. The elements I work with suggest to me—both in their combinations and in their physical state—that we overlook the necessary decline of elements that we throw away.
For this reason, I have used a fixative on some of my works: to stop the process of decay (of rust and deterioration) and to lock the work into the present tense.
