Elizabeth Merei
Artists Statement:
"What I, as an artist, prefer about women's bodies is what we all love about them: the softness, the delicacy of lips, of long arching necks, the smooth contours of the body, and cascading tangles of hair," says Merei. She explores how women possess both tenderness and power through her use of materials. Leaving part of her material natural, she allows her figures to emerge from rough alabaster, marble, soapstone and even cast glass.
It's not surprising that Elizabeth focuses her art on the beauty and grace of women's bodies. She was born and raised in Hungary, steeped in centuries of European culture where sculptors, poets, musicians and painters gave chase to the glorious, elusive beauty that is woman.
