Artist Statement

Throughout my artistic career, I have always been fascinated with the art form of sculpture. And, in this pursuit, the area that has particularly interested me is the sculpted human figure, and especially portrait sculpture.

With regard to portrait sculpture, the challenging goal is to capture a characteristic facial expression along with a pose that has animation – movement.

My approach in sculpting is to apply the clay in small quantities with gestural pressure to create a surface that expresses an attitude of motion. I find this stage to be the most rewarding aspect, that is seeing it come to life. And, eventually, these sculptures are either cast in Hydrocal or Bronze.

I believe that sculpture will always endure as this is how people view the natural world – ‘in the round’.
